PC System Requirements and Compatibility Guide

This guide will help you ensure that your Windows computer is up to the task of running Velogic Studio.

This guide will help you ensure that your Windows computer is up to the task of running Velogic Studio.

The requirements are different depending on whether you're running Velogic Studio Essentials (with a single depth camera) or Velogic Studio Pro (with multiple simultaneous depth cameras).

System requirements: Velogic Studio Essentials (single depth camera)

Velogic Studio Essentials uses a single depth camera (Kinect), and so has slightly lower requirements.

Note: It is possible to use a single Orbbec Femto Mega camera with Velogic Studio Essentials; but you should refer to the specs below in that case.

If you're looking for a new PC to meet these requirements, see our Recommended computers for Velogic Studio Essentials (Kinect camera).

System requirements: Velogic Studio Pro (multiple depth cameras)

Velogic Studio Pro uses two or more depth cameras simultaneously (Orbbec Femto Mega), and so has higher processing requirements.

Note 1: How to check CPU (processor) compatibility

You can check the processor by running the System Information app, and looking at the Processor entry. For example:

  • Level: The "i9" indicates the "Level" of the processor. It's likely to be i5, i7 or i9.

  • Generation: The "10900X" indicates that it's a 10th generation processor. This number should start wither either 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 or later.

  • Suffix: The letter or letters at the end of the name are called a suffix, and it a key indicator of the processor's capabilities. For Velogic Studio Pro, this should be: F, H, HX, HK, K, P, S, T, X, XE. It should NOT be a one of these "efficiency" (low-performance) suffixes: U, Y, E, UE, HE, UL, HL

  • Cores: Velogic Studio does a lot of processing, and therefore the number of cores is a key factor in how well it runs. The number of cores required depends on how many cameras you have. Add up the following to get a minimum number of cores; more is always better:

    • 1 core base

    • 2 cores per 3D camera (Orbbec or Kinect)

    • 1 core per webcam

    • ... so for dual Orbbec cameras with 1 webcam, you would need 6 cores minimum

Please contact us if you would like us to help assess your system for compatibility with Velogic Studio.

Note 2: Network port

Velogic Studio connects to the Orbbec Femto Mega cameras via the network port.

  • If you only have a single Orbbec Femto Mega camera, you can connect it directly to the computer with a network cable (but the camera will require a separate power source, because you won't be using PoE - Power over Ethernet)

  • For two or more Orbbec Femto Mega cameras, you will need a PoE network switch; see the purchasing FAQ for details.

You will therefore need a dedicated RJ45 port (network port) on your computer for this purpose. If you computer only has one network port which is already in use (or has no network ports and you connect to the internet via wifi), you will need to purchase a USB-to-network dongle such as this.

Does it need to be Windows?

Some users have reported success running our software on Mac hardware (using Bootcamp) but we don't test with, or officially support, Apple systems.

If your computer doesn't meet these specs, but you would like to try it anyway, you're welcome to - but we won't be able to offer you support.
