Velogic Studio Pro (Femto Mega) - Purchasing FAQ

Velogic Studio Pro (Femto Mega) - Purchasing FAQ

This page will answer all your questions about the hardware required for Velogic Studio Pro with one or more Orbbec Femto Mega cameras:

Are you in the right place? Essentials vs Pro

Velogic Studio is available in 2 product variants:
  1. Velogic Studio Essentials supports one active 3D camera, which will usually be a Kinect for XBox One camera
  2. Velogic Studio Pro supports for simultaneous bilateral capture, via multiple Orbbec Femto Mega cameras.
The remainder of this page is for Velogic Studio Pro with Orbbec Femto Mega camera(s). If you're using Velogic Studio Essentials, with Microsoft Kinect camera, see Velogic Studio Essentials (Kinect) - Purchasing FAQ.

(It's technically possible to use a single Orbbec Femto Mega camera with Velogic Studio Essentials, and a Kinect camera with Velogic Studio Pro. If you're doing that, contact us for guidance on which FAQ to follow).

Stage 0: Fit Studio Layout

In your fit studio, you need to identify where you will position components of the Velogic Studio system:
  1. Your cameras (bilateral to the rider)
  2. Your network switch and sync hub (usually next to each other, and usually but not necessarily close to the PC)
  3. Your PC
You'll find our guide to setting up the fit area helpful here. We're happy to work with you to recommend a layout based on your fit space and our experience.

Stage 1: The Gathering

In this stage, we make sure you've got all the hardware you need before installation.
When you have each of the items below, contact us to proceed to the Install stage.

PC meeting minimum specs

You'll need a computer meeting the system requirements for Velogic Studio Pro. Note that Velogic Studio is doing a lot of processing and requires a fast, modern processor with enough cores to give you solid performance.
If you're buying a new computer for Velogic Studio, please send us the system specifications so we can help you make sure it meets the requirements. If you already have a computer, please send us a screenshot of the System Information tool.

Specialist equipment (purchase through Velogic)

Cameras and sync hub
Velogic Studio Pro uses the Orbbec Femto Mega camera.
It's possible to purchase the camera directly from Orbbec, but we need to verify the firmware version and install custom software on the camera for it to work with Velogic Studio. Therefore, we recommend you purchase this pack of 2 cameras and sync hub from us: via BikeFitterSupply if you are in North America, or from our webshop for elsewhere. The camera will come with Velogic software preinstalled, and we will have ensured that it's running the correct firmware version.
If you do purchase a camera from Orbbec or elsewhere, you can send it to us for flashing & loading Velogic software, but there will be a service fee.
Note that the sync hub requires power via a USB-C connector (not supplied). If you have an spare USB-C phone charger, you can use that; otherwise, here's an example from Amazon

Joint Markers
Velogic Studio uses retro-reflective markers on 7 or 8 joints of the body (the heel marker is optional but recommended). With two cameras, you'll be marking both sides of your customers, so you will need 16 markers per fit.
Joint marker tape is available from BikeFitterSupply if you're in North America, and Velogic's web shop (shipping from New Zealand) in the rest of the world.
Depending on the number of fits you complete in your fit studio, we recommend that you order enough tape to ensure that you always have 1 months supply before reordering.

Measurement wand
This is used during the fit for calibration and measurement. It's available from BikeFitterSupply (TODO Link) if you're in the North America, and Velogic's web shop (shipping from New Zealand) in the rest of the world.

Saddle jig
This is used to quickly position the measurement wand at the point where the saddle is 80mm wide. It's available from BikeFitterSupply (TODO Link) if you're in the North America, and Velogic's web shop (shipping from New Zealand) in the rest of the world.

Non-specialist equipment (e.g. from Amazon)

Network switch
The Orbbec Femto Mega cameras are connected to the PC via a POE (Power-Over-Ethernet) network switch. We strongly recommend this Ubiquiti 8-port switch - if it's unavailable from Amazon, we recommend you search for it elsewhere.
In theory any other gigabit PoE switch will work, but in practice customers have had trouble with other units. If you do use something else be prepared for us to recommend swapping to the Ubiquiti unit if you have any network issues.

Spare network port
The Network Switch (above) needs to plug into your computer via a network port (RJ45). If your computer only has 1 network port, and you're currently using it (e.g. for internet), you have 2 options:
1. You could use wifi to connect to the internet, and therefore free up the RJ45 to plug in the network switch
2. Or, you could purchase a USB-to-ethernet adaptor; these are inexpensive and work well. Here's an example from Amazon.

Network cables
You will need 5 network cables in total:
  1. 1 network cable from each of the cameras to the network switch
  2. 1 network cable from the network switch to the PC
  3. 1 network cable from each of the cameras (via the pigtail adaptor that comes with the camera) to the sync hub
The network cables need to be cat5e or better. Network cables are inexpensive, so if you aren't exactly sure about the length, you can order cables that are too long initially, and then re-order cables at the ideal length once you've got the system setup.
If you are mounting a camera very close to the wall (or even recessed into the wall), be aware that network cables don't like tight bends, so you should purchase network cables with a 90degree connector, or use a 90 degree adaptor.

Stage 2: Install

Once you've gathered all the materials required from Stage 1, contact us to arrange an install.
We have a separate page which describes how to prepare for, book, and attend the installation session.
We'll schedule an hour where our technicians can remote-access into your computer.
Note also that you will need to have purchased a subscription to Velogic Studio v4 Pro before the install can be scheduled. You can do that either by clicking the "Buy now" link on our pricing page, or contact us and we'll create an invoice for you (e.g. if you're upgrading from Essentials)

Stage 3: Support

We'll check in with you to make sure all is going well in your initial weeks with the system. After that, we'll remain available to provide support as needed.
